Thursday’s Quote Corner

Thursday’s Quote Corner is exactly what it sounds like! Quotes from books I read! Yay! Okay, the yay may have been a little much. I saw a quote corner somewhere, once I remember the site, I’ll link it at the end of this post.

But for quote corner #1 the quote’s will be from Dumplin’ by Julie Murphy. I posted a review earlier in the week.

So without further ado, the quotes!

  1. Page 204: “I obviously don’t know the whole story here, but good friendships are durable. They’re meant to survive the gaps and the growing pains.” Oh, I related to this quote so well. I have friends that I don’t talk to often, but I know we’re still friends. Life gets busy.
  2. Page 212: “Perfection is nothing more than a phantom shadow we’re all chasing.” This is so true. We see others as perfect compared to ourselves, but yet, we’re perfect in our way. Perfection never really exists. We are all unique.
  3. Page 333: “Loyalty is … loyalty is being there for someone. It’s selfless. It’s about standing by someone’s side even when you don’t want to. […] Because you love them.” — “Loyalty isn’t blind. […] Loyalty is telling someone they’re wrong when no one else will.” Oh how this is so true. Loyalty is many things. It’s being there for someone even when things get tough.
  4. Page 369: “I guess sometimes the perfection we perceive in others is made up of a whole bunch of tiny imperfections, because some days the damn dress just won’t zip.”

NOTE: All quotes from Dumplin’ are the work of the author, Julie Murphy. I do not own them in anyway.

REVIEW: Dumplin’ by Julie Murphy

Title: Dumplin’

Dumplin’ was published in 2015 by Balzar + Bray. It’s taken me 3 years to get around to reading it, and honestly, I should’ve read it when it first came out. It was so wonderful. There’s laughter, heartbreak, and a true message to the book. A message that I’m sure, I’ll remember for quite some time.

I’m not very good at summarizing books, but I’ll give a try.

Dumplin’ follows Willowdean Dickson, or Will as she prefers. Will is a little on the heavy side when it comes to her body size. But she doesn’t let that bother her most days. That is until a boy at work starts falling for her.

Her mother runs the local beauty pageant every year and has never been comfortable with the size of her daughter.

Will’s best friend Ellen, wants to take the next step with her boyfriend Tim. But when she does, she leaves out some information that she instead tells her coworker. When Will gets word of this, she starts to feel left out. Especially since Will and Ellen used to share everything with each other.

Will decides to enter the local beauty pageant. Mostly to prove, that it doesn’t matter what size you are. Which I agree with 100%. However, she asks Ellen not to be in it. This is where their friendship really begins to have issues.

The novel continues and pageant day nears. The pageant goes well, but definitely not how I expected it. Friendships are reconnected and Will may finally begin to accept that she can be with a boy she likes, no matter what other people think.

This is where I must end the summary. Only because, I don’t want to spoil the novel for you. I absolutely loved it. There is a sequel out now, called Puddin’. You can find more information about the author and her books here.

I do have some quotes I want to share, but those will be posted Thursday!

I hope you enjoyed the review and I hope you check out the book!

Happy reading,

Hello and welcome to Bookish Brain Reads. You may have found this website through Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Goodreads, or just by chance. However you found your way here, thank you for visiting.

Bookish Brain Reads is about books, as the name entails. The “Brain” part of the name, comes from my love of science.

I created this website for multiple reasons. The most important one, is to share my love of reading. I plan on doing reviews, but I also plan on posting other things as well. Such as: quotes, book related products, quotes from TV shows, thoughts on shows/movies, stationary/planner themed topics, etc. I’m sure you get the gist of it by now.

The most important part of this blog for me, is it being laid back. As of right now there will be no posting schedule. I find that having an assigned schedule for a blog like mine, may not be in my best interest. It tends to cause me more stress than anything. If this blog manages to take off, then at some point, I may post and go by a schedule. But for now, I find not having a schedule takes some of the stress away. I want to be able to share what I love. But in a relaxing environment.

So with that being said, I thank you for stopping by and hope that you plan on subscribing. I’m planning on putting an About Me up soonish, but have no exact time frame.

Happy Reading!
