What to Read When None of This Is True

None of This Is True by Lisa Jewell

A Five-Star Book Review

Lisa Jewell is the queen of psychological thrillers, and her latest novel, None of This Is True, is an example of why that title is firmly in her hands.

A Quick Synopsis of None of This Is True

When Josie Fair sees another birthday celebration at the pub where she and her husband Walter have ventured out for her birthday dinner, she’s intrigued by the glamorous partygoers and beautiful birthday girl who, unexpectedly, is celebrating her 45th birthday as well. Once Josie learns her birthday twin’s name, Alix Summer, her plan begins to move.

After more not-so-chance meetings, Josie convinces Alix that she should be the next topic for Alix’s podcast as a woman who is about to make significant changes in her life. Soon, Alix hears about the abuse, trauma, and grooming that Josie has endured in her life, and she feels great empathy for her interview subject. But, after one failed dinner party, Alix starts to question the story Josie has shared, culminating in an act of complete and irreparable betrayal. But, what is the motive? Who is to blame? What is the truth?

What I Loved about None of This Is True

I admire a writer who can create unlikeable characters and still keep you reading their novel. From the beginning, Josie is an untrustworthy character with a lot of ick factor: stealing, control issues, to name just two. Alix is easygoing but has her own flaws as she refuses to fight for her own needs in her marriage. Still, I felt empathy for both Josie and Alix.

Ms. Jewell has mastered the psychological twists in novels, and this book is no different. With great pacing and the addition of mysterious side characters who have their own motives, the truth isn’t apparent. The plot moves along smoothly as you question every story and explanation. And the end? Definitely a satisfying wow.

Do you like psychological thrillers? Any you’d recommend to me?
